March 2025 Fire Council

March Fire Council featuring Fireforest Film Screening and a presentation by Shawna Legarza

We had an eventful Fire Council on March 18th. We held a screening of Fireforest, a film about the Cameron Peak Fire produced by Evan Barrientos. This 16-minute film tells the story of what happened there through the accounts of a U.S. Forest Service fire specialist, a Larimer Conservation District forester, and the Drala land manager. Together, they urge us to see fire and forest management as natural and essential parts of the landscape. By shifting the way we perceive fire and actively preparing forests to receive it, we can create hope for living with wildfires.

After the film, Shawna Legarza, the Director of Emergency Management for the La Plata County joined us for a Ready Set GO! presentation. She explained the importance of preparing for wildfires, and the steps you can take to be ready to evacuate at any time. She also explained the importance of being aware of where fires are in your area. If you live in La Plata County, make sure you are signed up for CodeRed, La Plata County’s Emergency Telephone Association’s notification system.  Register up to five cell or Internet phone numbers with your physical street address, ensuring that you get emergency notifications even when you’re not at home or if you don’t have a land line. Use the link or text LPCOEM to 99411 to register. It’s free and a great way to stay prepared.
